DaltonDalton, Massachusetts

Give Dalton one night as a Pittsfield base: the Appalachian Trail crosses Main Street, and Wahconah Falls is a 15-minute drive. Skip it as a standalone stop.

Dalton is a Berkshire mill town of about 6,800 people, 10 minutes east of Pittsfield on MA Route 8/9. Crane Currency has made US banknote paper here since 1801, and the Appalachian Trail runs through the town centre. Most travellers use it as a cheaper bed near Pittsfield, or as a trailhead and waterfall stop on the way to the northern Berkshires.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights are spread over 5–8 km of valley and the WMA trailheads sit on dirt roads. The town centre is walkable. BRTA Route 4 runs between Pittsfield and Hinsdale with two stops in Dalton, and stops at the Park Ave / High St trailhead.

Watch out

Safety

Low street crime; the real risks are winter ice on trails, unmarked WMA paths and hunting season in autumn. Cell coverage thins out in the Chalet and Day Mountain areas.
  • Gulf Road and other WMA access roads are dirt and open seasonally: check conditions before driving in.
  • Crane Currency mill buildings are closed to the public; the museum runs pop-up workshops only.
  • No swimming at Wahconah Falls; the pools are shallow and the rocks are slick.
  • Hunting is allowed in the WMAs in season: wear orange on trails in autumn.
