Estelí sits on the Pan-American highway in Nicaragua's northern highlands, cooler than the Pacific lowlands and known for tobacco, coffee and Sandinista murals. It works as a 2-night stop between Managua and the Honduran border, with the Miraflor reserve and Tisey-Estanzuela as the main reasons to stay longer. Buses from Managua run about every 30 minutes.

The centre is small enough to walk. Local buses cost a few córdobas and shared taxis run C$12–20 inside the city; agree the price before you get in. For Miraflor and Tisey, buses leave from the northern terminal or the Cotran Sur stop on the Pan-American at fixed morning times.

Safety
- Buses to Miraflor and Tisey leave only a few times a day; miss the last one and you pay for a taxi or stay the night.
- Some cigar factories only accept pre-arranged tours; ask at your hostel the day before.
- Shared taxis and buses are cheap but crowded; keep bags on your lap and cash out of sight.
- Highland nights are cool; bring a light jacket even in the dry season.
