Hamilton, ScotlandHamaltan

Give Hamilton half a day for the mausoleum and country park, then sleep in Glasgow: it is 25–30 min by train and has far more to do.

Hamilton is a Lanarkshire town of about 55,000 people, 12 miles southeast of Glasgow at the meeting of the Clyde and the Avon Water. It was the seat of the Dukes of Hamilton, and their 18th- and 19th-century leftovers — a vast empty mausoleum, a hunting-lodge folly, a country park — are the reason to come. The centre is compact and walkable, the trains from Glasgow run every 15 minutes, and almost everything worth seeing is free. Most travellers see it as a half-day or a one-night stop, not a base.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

The centre is compact and pedestrian-friendly, with traffic-free malls; walk it. Trains from Glasgow Central run every 15 min to Hamilton Central (25–30 min) and Hamilton West. Local buses (201, 205, 250, 226, 230) run up Union Street and out to Blantyre, East Kilbride and the suburbs. Chatelherault has its own station on the Larkhall branch. Taxis and car hire are available; most drivers arrive on the M74 and exit at junction 6.

Watch out

Safety

Hamilton is a normal Scottish town and feels safe by day; the centre is busy at weekends and the usual late-night pub caution applies. The real risks are wet, dark park paths and the Clyde and Avon Water after rain.
  • Two stations, one town: Hamilton Central for the centre and bus station, Hamilton West for the football ground and west end.
  • The mausoleum and country park are free and open at all hours, but the park paths are unlit after dark.
  • Cadzow Castle in Chatelherault is an unsafe ruin: view it from the bridge, do not climb on it.
  • Some Hamilton Water Palace facilities are closed; check before you pack a swim kit.
  • Race days at Hamilton Park fill the north-end hotels: book ahead or check the fixture list.
