Hamilton is a Lanarkshire town of about 55,000 people, 12 miles southeast of Glasgow at the meeting of the Clyde and the Avon Water. It was the seat of the Dukes of Hamilton, and their 18th- and 19th-century leftovers — a vast empty mausoleum, a hunting-lodge folly, a country park — are the reason to come. The centre is compact and walkable, the trains from Glasgow run every 15 minutes, and almost everything worth seeing is free. Most travellers see it as a half-day or a one-night stop, not a base.

Get around
The centre is compact and pedestrian-friendly, with traffic-free malls; walk it. Trains from Glasgow Central run every 15 min to Hamilton Central (25–30 min) and Hamilton West. Local buses (201, 205, 250, 226, 230) run up Union Street and out to Blantyre, East Kilbride and the suburbs. Chatelherault has its own station on the Larkhall branch. Taxis and car hire are available; most drivers arrive on the M74 and exit at junction 6.
