Manado is the capital of North Sulawesi and the gateway to Bunaken National Park, a 30-minute boat ride offshore. The city itself is a working Indonesian port with a Chinese quarter, a long waterfront boulevard and a food culture that is spicy, pork-friendly and unlike anywhere else in the country. Most travellers use it for two nights, then move on to Bunaken, Tomohon or Tangkoko.

Getting around
Angkot minibuses (Rp 6,000 per trip, 2026 estimate) run fixed routes and are the cheapest way around; flag one down on the street. Bluebird taxis are the most reliable metered option. Grab and Gojek work in the city, and both can be booked to Tomohon for a little extra. Ojeks (motorbike taxis) are negotiated per trip.
