Manado is the capital of North Sulawesi and the gateway to Bunaken National Park, a 30-minute boat ride offshore. The city itself is a working Indonesian port with a Chinese quarter, a long waterfront boulevard and a food culture that is spicy, pork-friendly and unlike anywhere else in the country. Most travellers use it for two nights, then move on to Bunaken, Tomohon or Tangkoko.

Get around
Angkot minibuses (Rp 6,000 per trip, 2026 estimate) run fixed routes and are the cheapest way around; flag one down on the street. Bluebird taxis are the most reliable metered option. Grab and Gojek work in the city, and both can be booked to Tomohon for a little extra. Ojeks (motorbike taxis) are negotiated per trip.

- Drink spiking and late-night fights are reported around the bar strip; keep to known venues and watch your drink.
- Domestic departure tax at MDC is charged separately at some counters — keep cash.
Manado is generally safe by day, but the bar strip has a reputation for drink spiking and late-night fights. Use metered taxis or app rides after dark, keep valuables out of sight in markets, and treat the water and ice with normal caution outside hotels.
