Offenburg

Give Offenburg one night as a rail stop between Freiburg and Baden-Baden, or a half-day for the market and Ritterhaus museum; two nights only if you hike the wine trail.

Offenburg sits where the Rhine plain meets the Kinzig valley, an hour south of Strasbourg and 30 minutes north of Freiburg by train. The old town is a flat pedestrian zone you can cross in ten minutes; the draw is the Tuesday and Saturday market, the 1848 revolution history at the Salmen, and vineyard walking in the hills above town. Most travellers use it as a base for the Ortenau wine villages or a stop on the Frankfurt–Basel line.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Getting around

The historic centre is almost entirely pedestrian; the Hauptbahnhof to Marktplatz is under 10 minutes on foot. Local buses run from the Busbahnhof above the station. Hotels often issue the KONUS Guest Card, which covers local buses and regional trains in the Black Forest area — ask at check-in.

Gengenbach

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Regional train from Offenburg Hbf, about 10 min

Half-timbered old town; in December the town hall becomes a large advent calendar.

Strasbourg

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Regional train across the Rhine, about 30 min

Cathedral and Petite France; bring ID, you cross a border.

Freiburg

go

Door to door: About 1 h

ICE or regional train south along the Rhine, 30–40 min

Bigger old town, cathedral market and a gateway to the southern Black Forest.

Door to door: About 1 h

ICE north, about 20 min, then bus or taxi to the centre

Thermal baths and the casino; the station sits outside town, so add the bus.

Door to door: About 1 h by car

Car about 30 min south; rail plus shuttle is slower

A full day and a dated ticket; without a car the transfer is fiddly.

Karlsruhecaution

Door to door: About 1 h

ICE or regional train north, 30–40 min

Worth it for the fan-shaped palace layout and museums, not for a rushed half-day.

Old town / pedestrian zone

Walk to the market, museum and station in under 10 minutes; quietest rooms face away from Hauptstraße.

Around the Hauptbahnhof

Best for one night with bags or an early ICE; the bus station sits directly above the platforms.

Zell-Weierbach

Vineyard district 3–4 km (1.9–2.5 mi) east; base for the wine trail, needs a bus or taxi into town.

Ortenberg

Village 5 km (3.1 mi) away with a castle youth hostel; cheap beds, but you depend on a bus or car.

Watch out

Safety

Offenburg is a low-risk small city; the usual care applies around the station at night, and vineyard paths are unlit after dusk.
  • Market stalls pack up around 13:00 on Tuesday and Saturday; arrive before noon.
  • Schloss Ortenberg castle is a youth hostel and only opens to visitors April–October, 09:00–19:00.
  • Sunday is quiet: most shops close and some restaurants shut.
  • Wine-trail paths climb through open vineyards with little shade; carry water in summer.
