Offenburg
Give Offenburg one night as a rail stop between Freiburg and Baden-Baden, or a half-day for the market and Ritterhaus museum; two nights only if you hike the wine trail.
Offenburg sits where the Rhine plain meets the Kinzig valley, an hour south of Strasbourg and 30 minutes north of Freiburg by train. The old town is a flat pedestrian zone you can cross in ten minutes; the draw is the Tuesday and Saturday market, the 1848 revolution history at the Salmen, and vineyard walking in the hills above town. Most travellers use it as a base for the Ortenau wine villages or a stop on the Frankfurt–Basel line.

The historic centre is almost entirely pedestrian; the Hauptbahnhof to Marktplatz is under 10 minutes on foot. Local buses run from the Busbahnhof above the station. Hotels often issue the KONUS Guest Card, which covers local buses and regional trains in the Black Forest area — ask at check-in.
