Bhaktapur is a walled Newar town 12 km east of Kathmandu, at 1,401 m, and the best-preserved of the valley's three Durbar Squares. Cars, tuk-tuks and rickshaws are banned inside, so you walk brick lanes between temples, potters' yards and drying grain. Most visitors come as a day-trip; one night is what the town is actually for.

Getting around

On foot. The old town is about 1.5 km across and vehicles are not allowed inside; locals on motorbikes still use the lanes, so keep left and listen. Taxis and buses wait outside the gates. Bicycles are allowed but the brick lanes are rough.

Watch out

Safety

Bhaktapur is calm and walkable, with very little street crime. The real risks are uneven brick lanes after dark, motorbikes in the pedestrian lanes, valley air quality in winter, and touts selling 'guide' services at the gates.
  • The heritage ticket is checked at the gates; keep it on you and ask at the counter to register it for repeat entry (up to a week).
  • Some lanes are uneven brick with open drains: watch your step after dark, and carry a torch.
  • Air quality in the valley is worst Dec–Feb; a mask helps on bad days.
  • Only change money at banks or licensed counters; the old town has few ATMs.
  • Do not photograph cremation ghats or worshippers without asking.
