- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- New Zealand ↗Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA (with the tourism levy) before travel, including many transit passengers; others need a visa. Apply only through Immigration New Zealand or its official app, and check the rules for your passport.
- New Zealand ↗Declare all food, plant and animal products, and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents, on the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; undeclared risk items bring instant fines.
- New Zealand ↗Drive on the left; give way as signed at one-lane bridges; an English-language licence or one with an approved translation or International Driving Permit is required.
- New Zealand ↗Freedom camping is restricted: sleep in a vehicle only where signed as allowed, and in many places only in certified self-contained vehicles.
Christchurch is the South Island's biggest city and its main international gateway, flat and easy to walk or cycle, with a compact centre rebuilt since the 2011 earthquake. It is the driest of New Zealand's big cities, so it works as a first or last stop on a South Island road trip rather than a destination in itself.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
The centre is flat and walkable; the four avenues (Bealey, Fitzgerald, Deans, Moorhouse) ring it. Metro buses run cross-city routes every 15 min by day, cash fare $6 or $3 with a Metrocard; the Orbiter circles the inner suburbs. Cycling is common, with a 30 km/h limit in the central city. The heritage tram is an attraction, not transport.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Akaroa
goDoor to door: About 1.5 h each way
Drive via State Highway 75 over the Port Hills, about 1 h 15 min; or a booked shuttle
French-settled harbour village; harbour cruises and the drive over the hills are the point.
Lyttelton
goDoor to door: About 30 min
Drive through the Lyttelton road tunnel, about 20 min; or bus
Half-day: harbour town with cafés and a Saturday market.
Hanmer Springs
overnightDoor to door: About 2 h each way
Drive via State Highway 7, about 1 h 45 min
Thermal pools and alpine walks; better with a night.
Lake Tekapo
overnightDoor to door: About 3 h each way
Drive via State Highway 8, about 3 h
Too far for a return day; stop on the way to Aoraki/Mount Cook.
Timaru
cautionDoor to door: About 2.5 h each way
Drive south on State Highway 1, about 2 h 15 min
A stop on the drive south, not a day trip in itself.

Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Central city (Cathedral Square / Worcester Blvd)
Walk to the Avon, Arts Centre and Botanic Gardens; best for a short stay without a car.
Riccarton / Addington
Near the university, malls and the railway station; cheaper rooms, bus into town.
Sumner or New Brighton
Beach suburbs, 20–30 min by bus; quiet, good for a slower stay.
