Christchurch is the South Island's biggest city and its main international gateway, flat and easy to walk or cycle, with a compact centre rebuilt since the 2011 earthquake. It is the driest of New Zealand's big cities, so it works as a first or last stop on a South Island road trip rather than a destination in itself.

Get around
The centre is flat and walkable; the four avenues (Bealey, Fitzgerald, Deans, Moorhouse) ring it. Metro buses run cross-city routes every 15 min by day, cash fare $6 or $3 with a Metrocard; the Orbiter circles the inner suburbs. Cycling is common, with a 30 km/h limit in the central city. The heritage tram is an attraction, not transport.
