Huonville

Give Huonville one night only if you have a car — it is a 39 km (24 mi) drive from Hobart with no useful public transport; without a car, pass through or stay in Hobart.

Huonville is the service hub of the Huon Valley, 39 km south-west of Hobart on the A6, with a population of a few thousand. The river, the roadside fruit stalls and the Mount Misery rainforest walk are the reasons to stop; there is almost no public transport, so a car decides everything. Most trips use it for one night or as a lunch stop between Hobart and the far south.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

Drive. There is minimal public transport in the valley; hire a car in Hobart and use Huonville as a base for the A6 and B68 loops. The town itself is small enough to walk, but Cygnet, Franklin, Geeveston and the Mount Misery trailhead all need a vehicle.

Huonville town centre

Main Road (the A6) is the main street; walkable to shops, the river esplanade and most eateries.

Ranelagh and Grove

5–10 min drive north (check); bush-retreat cabins and farm stays, needs a car for everything.

Port Huon

Down the A6 south of Huonville; quieter river cottages, drive time check, needs a car.

Franklin

Separate village on the A6 south along the river; riverfront heritage stay, drive time check, needs a car.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet country town and generally safe. The real risks are wildlife on unlit roads at dusk, cold wet weather any month, and long driving distances with no phone signal in the hills: tell someone your route.
  • No useful bus service: without a car you are stuck in town.
  • Roadside stalls are often cash or honesty-box; carry small notes.
  • Mountain roads are unlit and wildlife crosses at dusk: avoid driving after dark.
  • Fuel up in Huonville; stations thin out further south.
