Huonville
Give Huonville one night only if you have a car — it is a 39 km drive from Hobart with no useful public transport; without a car, pass through or stay in Hobart.
Huonville is the service hub of the Huon Valley, 39 km south-west of Hobart on the A6, with a population of a few thousand. The river, the roadside fruit stalls and the Mount Misery rainforest walk are the reasons to stop; there is almost no public transport, so a car decides everything. Most trips use it for one night or as a lunch stop between Hobart and the far south.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No useful bus service: without a car you are stuck in town.
- Roadside stalls are often cash or honesty-box; carry small notes.
- Mountain roads are unlit and wildlife crosses at dusk: avoid driving after dark.
- Fuel up in Huonville; stations thin out further south.
A quiet country town and generally safe. The real risks are wildlife on unlit roads at dusk, cold wet weather any month, and long driving distances with no phone signal in the hills: tell someone your route.
