Give Vanadzor one night as a transport hub and Soviet-architecture stop, not two: the Debed canyon monasteries are 1–1.5 h north, so sleep in Alaverdi for those.
Vanadzor is Armenia's third city, in a narrow river valley in Lori, and the country's best-preserved Soviet centre: a huge square, a dead chemical plant, a station that once reached Eastern Europe. Its own sights fill half a day. Its real value is the bus and rail junction for the north — Debed canyon, Stepanavan, Dilijan, Gyumri, Tbilisi — so most travellers use it as one night between Yerevan and the monasteries, or skip it and sleep closer to the canyon.

Getting around
The centre is small and walkable: square, churches, museums and parks sit within about 2 km. The Botanical Garden is about 1.5 km from the centre on the southern hill. Marshrutkas run constantly on the main avenues; taxis are metered, cheap and the practical way to reach outer monasteries or the garden. Agree the fare before you get in if the meter is off.
