Corner Brook
Give Corner Brook one full day as a base for Gros Morne and Marble Mountain; two nights if you ski or hike, one if you are only passing on the Trans-Canada.
Corner Brook is the largest city in Western Newfoundland (about 19,300 people) and the practical base for the region: Gros Morne National Park, Marble Mountain and the Humber Valley are all within an hour. The city itself is small, hilly and walkable in the centre, with a compact downtown on West Street and Broadway, a pulp-and-paper history, and a stream trail system that runs from the downtown into a gorge. Most travellers use it for one or two nights between the Port aux Basques ferry and Gros Morne.

Getting around
Corner Brook is built on steep hills, so what looks like a 15-minute walk on a map can take 25–30 min uphill. Corner Brook Transit runs two routes from about 07:00–10:00 and 15:00–19:00 on a half-hour cycle, and 10:00–15:00 on an hourly cycle; in June–August only the hourly cycle runs, and there is no weekend service. A car is the practical choice for Gros Morne, Marble Mountain and the Humber Valley. Taxis cross town for roughly $15.

- Winter tyres are effectively required from about November to April; all-season tyres will not get you up the hills.
- The Trans-Canada Highway here numbers exits, not distances, so navigation apps can mislead you.
- Gros Morne National Park is about an hour's drive: check park opening and shuttle dates before you commit.
- The winter ferry between Corner Brook and Blanc Sablon runs only in some years: check the official ferry schedule.
