Corner Brook is the largest city in Western Newfoundland (about 19,300 people) and the practical base for the region: Gros Morne National Park, Marble Mountain and the Humber Valley are all within an hour. The city itself is small, hilly and walkable in the centre, with a compact downtown on West Street and Broadway, a pulp-and-paper history, and a stream trail system that runs from the downtown into a gorge. Most travellers use it for one or two nights between the Port aux Basques ferry and Gros Morne.

Corner Brook Transit runs two routes from about 07:00–10:00 and 15:00–19:00 on a half-hour cycle, and 10:00–15:00 on an hourly cycle; in June–August only the hourly cycle runs, and there is no weekend service. A car is the practical choice for Gros Morne, Marble Mountain and the Humber Valley.
