Kamloops

Give Kamloops 1–2 nights as a highway stop between Vancouver and the Rockies, or 2–3 if you ski Sun Peaks; it is a base, not a sight list.

Kamloops sits where the North and South Thompson rivers meet, in the dry rain-shadow interior of British Columbia. Both the Trans-Canada Highway and the Coquihalla pass through, so most travellers see it as a break on the Vancouver–Banff drive or a gateway to Sun Peaks. The city itself is compact: a small downtown, riverfront parks, a wildlife park and grassland trails. Two nights covers the town; add a night for skiing or a day on the water.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

Downtown, Riverside Park and the art gallery are walkable. BC Transit buses cover the city but run infrequently; a car is the practical choice for the wildlife park, Lac du Bois and Sun Peaks. Taxis and Uber operate; the airport is west of downtown (drive time check).

A long return outing; consider it as a route stop instead.

Better used as a route stop than a dedicated day trip.

Cache Creek

More useful as a stop en route than as a destination from Kamloops.

Allow time for the drive and check road conditions.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / Victoria Street

Walk to restaurants, Riverside Park and the art gallery; best for one night without a car.

Columbia Street West / Sahali

Highway-side hotels near Aberdeen Mall; easy parking and quick access to Hwy 1 and Hwy 5.

North Shore / Tranquille Road

Cheaper motels and the Northills centre; 10 min drive from downtown.

Sun Peaks

45 min north on Hwy 5; ski-in lodging, only worth it if you are skiing or riding.

Watch out

Safety

Use ordinary city precautions: lock your car and keep bags out of sight. Main outdoor risks include summer heat, rattlesnakes in grassland, swift cold river water and winter highway conditions.
  • Summer is hot and dry; carry water on trails, and check for wildfire smoke or fire-related closures before heading out.
  • Rattlesnakes occur in Lac du Bois grasslands; watch your step.
  • The Coquihalla (Hwy 5) can become icy, snow-covered or impassable in winter; check DriveBC before setting out.
  • The Thompson River is swift and cold; Riverside Park's swimming area is not always patrolled.
