Aizuwakamatsu会津若松
Give Aizuwakamatsu one full day and one night: castle, Iimoriyama and the samurai sites. Two nights only if you add Higashiyama Onsen or Mt Bandai.
Aizuwakamatsu is the castle town of the Aizu region in western Fukushima, about 3 hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen plus a local train. It is a compact samurai-history town: a rebuilt castle, the Byakkotai sites on Iimoriyama, a 1803 clan school and two craft workshops. Most travellers see it in a day; the onsen at Higashiyama and the lake at Inawashiro are the reasons to stay longer.

Getting around
The sightseeing bus loops from Aizuwakamatsu Station to the castle, Iimoriyama and the samurai sites; a one-day pass costs about ¥500. Two buses run the same route in opposite directions, so check which way yours goes. Walking from the station to the castle or Iimoriyama takes about 40 minutes each way.

Safety
- The castle keep is a 1965 concrete reconstruction, not an original building; the museum inside is the reason to enter.
- Iimoriyama has many steps; there is an escalator for about ¥250 (≈ US$2).
- Winter brings heavy snow and some rural buses and trains slow or stop; check timetables before a day trip.
- Small shops, shrines and craft workshops often take cash only.
