Shimla is Himachal Pradesh's capital and the old British summer capital, built along a ridge at about 2,200 m. The historic core — the Mall and the Ridge — is closed to traffic, so you explore on foot between Victorian buildings, churches and bazaars. Most people come for 2 nights, using it as a base for Kufri, Chail and the Kalka–Shimla mountain railway.

Getting around

The centre is walk-only: the Mall and Ridge are closed to traffic and linked to Cart Road by lifts (₹10 a trip). Local buses run about 7:00–21:00 for ₹10 anywhere in the city. Taxis are best for Jakhoo, the Viceregal Lodge and day trips; agree the fare first. Jakhu Ropeway runs up to Jakhoo Hill.

Watch out

Safety

Shimla is generally safe for tourists, including solo women, in the busy centre. The real risks are monsoon landslides, winter ice, altitude on the climb to Jakhoo, and monkeys that snatch food and glasses.
  • Jakhoo's monkeys grab food, glasses and bags — keep everything zipped and don't feed them.
  • Monsoon (Jul–Aug) brings landslides and road closures on the Kalka–Shimla highway.
  • Winter snow and ice make pavements and the toy train unreliable; check status before you travel.
  • Touts at bus stands and stations sell 'packages' — use the official tourist offices instead.
  • The Mall and Ridge are car-free, so pick a hotel you can reach on foot with bags.
