Kesennuma is a working fishing port on the Sanriku coast of Miyagi, rebuilt after the 11 March 2011 tsunami that killed more than 1,000 people here. The draw is not scenery in the classic sense: it is the memorial museum that preserves a ruined school, the country's only shark museum, and a fish market that still runs the town. Rail along the coast was destroyed and never rebuilt, so you arrive by bus, BRT or car, and one night is usually enough.

Getting around

A city loop bus runs about six times a day in each direction between the station, city hall, Umi no Ichi, Tanaka-mae and the hospital; ¥200 a ride, ¥100 for children. Taxis cover the rest. The Karakuwa Peninsula and the memorial museum are far apart and badly served by bus: rent a car or book taxis if you want both in one day.

Watch out

Safety

Kesennuma is a small, quiet port town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are coastal weather, long gaps between buses, and cash-only shops; carry yen and check the last bus back.
  • Coastal rail was destroyed in 2011 and not rebuilt: plan on bus, BRT or car, not trains.
  • The memorial museum is a school building left as it was; some visitors find it hard. Allow quiet time after.
  • The Karakuwa Peninsula and the memorial museum are on opposite sides of town: do not schedule both back to back.
  • Small shops and restaurants close early and many take cash only.
  • Winter coastal roads can be slow; check conditions before driving north.
