Kolhapur is a pilgrimage and food city in south Maharashtra, on the Panchganga river, about 5–6 hours by road or train from Pune and 8 hours from Mumbai. Its draw is the Mahalakshmi Temple, the Maratha fort at Panhala, Kolhapuri chappals, jaggery and a spicy mutton cuisine. Sights sit 5–20 km apart, so plan around autos and one fort half-day rather than walking.

Getting around
Auto-rickshaws are the main way around; agree the fare or insist on the meter before you sit. A return auto to Panhala and back runs about ₹450 for the trip. City buses are cheap but slow in peak hours. A hired mid-size car with driver is about ₹2,400 a day, with extra charges past 250 km. Roads are congested and under construction in the centre.
