Mwanza is Tanzania's second city on the southern shore of Lake Victoria, built around granite boulders and a working port. Most travellers come for one or two nights on the way to Rwanda, Uganda or the western parks, or to break the long Dar es Salaam road. Sights are few and spread out; the lakefront, the fish and the market are the reasons to stay.

Getting around

Daladalas (minibus taxis) cover the city and suburbs for about TSh300–500 a trip; they are crowded and have no route maps, so ask your hotel which one to take. Taxis are white cars with white plates and no meter: agree the fare first. Pikipiki (motorbike taxis) are cheap but the most dangerous option in traffic.

Watch out

Safety

Mwanza is calm by big-city standards, but petty theft around the market and bus stations is common, taxis have no meters, and pikipikis are genuinely risky. Keep valuables hidden, use a hotel-arranged taxi after dark, and avoid walking the market with a wallet.
  • Agree taxi and pikipiki fares before you get in; there are no meters.
  • Keep your wallet out of sight in the market between Lumumba and Pamba Roads.
  • Swimming in the lake near town carries a schistosomiasis risk; ask at your lodge before you swim.
  • Long rains March–May can make unpaved roads and the lakeside tracks muddy.
  • Buses to the Rwanda and Burundi borders leave from Nyegezi station, about 10 km south of the centre.
