Posio is a forest-and-lake municipality in south-east Lapland, not a town in the usual sense: 3,600 people spread over an area bigger than many countries' regions, with the parish village of Ahola holding about half of them. People come for two things — the Korouoma canyon and Riisitunturi National Park — plus the Pentik ceramics factory and outlet, which draws around 100,000 design visitors a year. Sights sit 10–40 km apart, so a car decides whether Posio is a two-night base or a single stop on the Kuusamo–Rovaniemi road.

Getting around

A car is the practical answer: the centre is walkable, but Korouoma, Riisitunturi, Livojärvi and the museums are 10–40 km out with no useful public transport. In winter, studded or friction winter tyres are required and headlights are always on. Buses link Posio with Kuusamo, Rovaniemi and Oulu, but they serve the through-route, not the trailheads.

5 km (3.1 mi) and 8 km (5 mi) day trails; the canyon floor is 100–130 m deep. Winter: ice climbers' season. Check which trails and huts are open.

Riisitunturi National Park

Fell summits above 450 m and slope mires; the winter crown-snow spruces are the reason most people come. No public transport.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe; the real risks are distance, weather and phone signal. Tell someone your route before a park hike, carry a paper map, and treat −20 °C (−4 °F) and short winter daylight as the limit, not the challenge.
  • Korouoma's long trail and several rental huts and shelters have been closed for years because of damaged stairs, bridges and structures: check nationalparks.fi before you plan a route.
  • Riisitunturi and Korouoma trailheads have no bus service — a taxi or your own car is the only way in.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy: 4G in the village from one carrier, and often nothing on the approach roads or in the parks.
  • In winter, daylight is short and temperatures can sit well below −20 °C (−4 °F): plan hikes around the light, not the clock.
  • Many cottages, museums and cafés close outside summer and the ski season; confirm before booking a shoulder-season trip.
