Posio
Go for 2 nights if you have a car and want Korouoma canyon or Riisitunturi fell; skip if you rely on buses and want a town with a centre.
Posio is a forest-and-lake municipality in south-east Lapland, not a town in the usual sense: 3,600 people spread over an area bigger than many countries' regions, with the parish village of Ahola holding about half of them. People come for two things — the Korouoma canyon and Riisitunturi National Park — plus the Pentik ceramics factory and outlet, which draws around 100,000 design visitors a year. Sights sit 10–40 km apart, so a car decides whether Posio is a two-night base or a single stop on the Kuusamo–Rovaniemi road.

Get around
A car is the practical answer: the centre is walkable, but Korouoma, Riisitunturi, Livojärvi and the museums are 10–40 km (6.2–25 mi) out with no useful public transport. In winter, studded or friction winter tyres are required and headlights are always on. Buses link Posio with Kuusamo, Rovaniemi and Oulu, but they serve the through-route, not the trailheads.A car is the practical answer: the centre is walkable, but Korouoma, Riisitunturi, Livojärvi and the museums are 6.2–25 mi (10–40 km) out with no useful public transport. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake, eye contact, short and direct; avoid: Hugs and long small talk with strangers
- Silence: Let pauses be pauses; avoid: Filling every quiet moment
- Sauna: Shower first, ask before throwing water on the stones; avoid: Swimsuits in nude-only saunas, or nudity in mixed ones marked otherwise
- Home visit: Shoes off; bring flowers or pastries; avoid: Keeping shoes on indoors
- Personal space: Keep a metre's distance in queues; avoid: Sitting next to a stranger when other seats are free
- Promises: Mean what you say; Finns will; avoid: Polite 'let's meet sometime' you do not intend
Scams and watch-outs
- Korouoma's long trail and several rental huts and shelters have been closed for years because of damaged stairs, bridges and structures: check nationalparks.fi before you plan a route.
- Riisitunturi and Korouoma trailheads have no bus service — a taxi or your own car is the only way in.
- Mobile coverage is patchy: 4G in the village from one carrier, and often nothing on the approach roads or in the parks.
- In winter, daylight is short and temperatures can sit well below −20 °C: plan hikes around the light, not the clock.
- Many cottages, museums and cafés close outside summer and the ski season; confirm before booking a shoulder-season trip.
Very safe; the real risks are distance, weather and phone signal. Tell someone your route before a park hike, carry a paper map, and treat −20 °C (−4 °F) and short winter daylight as the limit, not the challenge.Very safe; the real risks are distance, weather and phone signal.
