  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Newberg sits at the north end of the Willamette Valley, about 45 minutes southwest of Portland on Highway 99W. It is a small town — roughly 22,000 people — with a compact old town of tasting rooms, bars and restaurants, and it works as the gateway to the Chehalem Valley wine country around Dundee and Carlton. Most visitors come for one or two nights, drive between wineries, and use it as a cheaper, quieter base than Portland for the wine route.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: wineries are spread across rural roads with no useful transit. Old town itself is small enough to walk in 10–15 minutes end to end. Yamhill County Transit runs a route along Highway 99W between Tigard and McMinnville with a stop at Nap's Thriftway on E 1st, plus local shuttles, but it does not reach the vineyards.

Watch out

Safety

Newberg is a low-crime small town and feels safe to walk in old town after dark. The real risk is rural driving after wine tasting: designate a driver or book one, and watch for deer and cyclists on the vineyard roads.
  • No rideshare or taxi coverage is reliable in the rural wine roads — arrange a designated driver or a booked driver.
  • Tasting fees are common and often not refunded against a bottle purchase; ask before you pour.
  • Winter brings steady rain and short daylight; rural tasting rooms may close early or by appointment only.
  • Highway 99W through town is a busy through-route; use the bypass if you are only passing through.

  2. Walking cluster for old town with tasting-room cutoffs and last orders.
  3. Place pages for Hoover–Minthorn House, the 99W drive-in and the main Chehalem tasting rooms.
  4. Wine-route driving fixtures so the no-drinking-and-driving rule is enforced, not just mentioned.
