Popenguine is a small Sereer fishing village on the Petite Côte, about 70 km south of Dakar, known for a 1,500 ha coastal reserve managed with a local women's group, a sandy beach, and a Catholic pilgrimage each Pentecost. It is a slow place: two nights covers the reserve, the beach and a pirogue or lagoon trip, and most travellers pair it with Mbour, Somone or Dakar rather than staying a week.

Getting around

The village is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. For the reserve, Somone lagoon or neighbouring villages, use a bush taxi, a horse or donkey cart, a rented pirogue, or walk along the beach. Agree the price before you set off.

Watch out

Safety

Popenguine itself is calm and low-key; the real risks are beach currents, unlit paths after dark, and petty theft in nearby Mbour and Saly. Agree prices first and keep valuables out of sight.
  • Petty theft and bag-snatching are more common in Mbour and Saly than in Popenguine; keep phones and cash out of sight in markets.
  • Women should not walk alone on the beach or unlit paths after dark.
  • Agree taxi, cart and pirogue prices before departure; buy out seats if you want to leave without waiting for the vehicle to fill.
  • Pentecost pilgrimage (late May) fills every bed: book about two months ahead or avoid those dates.
  • Swim with care: Atlantic surf and currents here are stronger than they look.
