Popenguine
Go for 2 nights if you want a quiet beach base with a women-run nature reserve; skip if you need nightlife or a big-town market.
Popenguine is a small Sereer fishing village on the Petite Côte, about 70 km south of Dakar, known for a 1,500 ha coastal reserve managed with a local women's group, a sandy beach, and a Catholic pilgrimage each Pentecost. It is a slow place: two nights covers the reserve, the beach and a pirogue or lagoon trip, and most travellers pair it with Mbour, Somone or Dakar rather than staying a week.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Long greetings: peace, family, health, work; avoid: Jumping straight to business
- Hands: Right hand for giving, receiving and eating; avoid: Left hand for food or money
- Teranga (hospitality): Accept tea and a little food when offered; avoid: Refusing flatly
- Religious leaders: Speak respectfully of marabouts and brotherhood founders; avoid: Jokes about religion
- Bargaining: Laugh, counter, take your time; avoid: Anger or walking off rudely
- Photos: Ask, and accept a no; avoid: Shooting women and children without consent
Scams and watch-outs
- Petty theft and bag-snatching are more common in Mbour and Saly than in Popenguine; keep phones and cash out of sight in markets.
- Women should not walk alone on the beach or unlit paths after dark.
- Agree taxi, cart and pirogue prices before departure; buy out seats if you want to leave without waiting for the vehicle to fill.
- Pentecost pilgrimage (late May) fills every bed: book about two months ahead or avoid those dates.
- Swim with care: Atlantic surf and currents here are stronger than they look.
Popenguine itself is calm and low-key; the real risks are beach currents, unlit paths after dark, and petty theft in nearby Mbour and Saly. Agree prices first and keep valuables out of sight.
