Pheriche

Stop for one night on the Everest Base Camp trek: acclimatise at 4,371 m, visit the Everest Memorial, and sleep before the climb to Lobuche. A day-trip from Dingboche is possible but you lose the altitude gain.

Pheriche is a high-altitude settlement in Sagarmatha National Park, 4,371 m, on the main Everest Base Camp trail. It is colder than neighbouring Dingboche because of a funnel wind. The village has lodges, a rudimentary seasonal hospital run by the Himalayan Rescue Association, and the Mount Everest Memorial. Most trekkers stay one night for acclimatisation.

Rules in force · 6
  • South Asia ↗Trekking regions, border districts and several Indian states need separate permits on top of the visa; check the permit before you book transport into them.
  • South Asia ↗Remove shoes (and in many Jain and Hindu temples, leather) before entering; cover shoulders and legs; ask before photographing people or rituals.
  • Nepal ↗Get visa information only from the Department of Immigration; visa-service lookalike sites charge extra, and the rules differ by nationality.
  • Nepal ↗At stupas walk clockwise; at temples and homes remove shoes where there is a rack or a raised floor; cover shoulders and knees.
  • Nepal ↗Carry Nepalese rupees in small notes: many stalls, taxis and tea shops are cash-only, and shops rarely take foreign notes.
  • Nepal ↗Strikes (bandh) and protests can close roads without notice: check the news and your hotel the night before any airport or highway day.

Watch out

Safety

Altitude sickness is the main risk. The HRA hospital is staffed only in the two trekking seasons. Carry a personal locator beacon or satellite messenger; mobile coverage is patchy.
  • Altitude sickness: ascend slowly, drink water, and descend if symptoms worsen.
  • The HRA hospital is open only March–May and October–December; outside those months, the nearest clinic is in Namche Bazaar.
  • Wind chill: Pheriche is noticeably colder than Dingboche; pack a windproof layer.
  • Lodges may close outside the two trekking seasons; confirm before you go.
