Lecce is a small baroque city in Puglia, walkable end to end in about 25 minutes, with more than 30 historic churches and a Roman amphitheatre in the main square. Most travellers use it as a base for the Salento coast and beaches, which are 20–40 minutes away by car or train. Two nights covers the old town properly; three lets you add beach and day-trip days.

Getting around

Walk. The whole old town is a limited-traffic zone (ZTL) and the sights sit within about 1 km of each other. SGM runs city buses and trolleybuses; buy tickets at tobacconists or newsstands before boarding. Regional trains and buses reach the coast towns.

Watch out

Safety

Lecce is a calm, walkable city and violent crime against visitors is rare. The real issues are summer heat, ZTL camera fines if you drive into the old town, and pickpockets around the station and market streets.
  • The old town is a ZTL: driving in without a permit means a camera fine. Park outside the walls and walk.
  • Lecce railway station has stairs but no lifts or ramps to the platforms — allow extra time with heavy bags.
  • Summer afternoons in July and August are punishing; do churches and museums before 11:00 and after 17:00.
  • Many restaurants in the old town aim at tourists; prices and quality vary more than the setting suggests.
