Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
  • Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
  • Italy ↗Italy is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Italy ↗Historic centres are ZTL limited-traffic zones: cameras fine any unauthorised car that enters, often months later through the hire company. Park outside and walk in.
  • Italy ↗Regional train tickets bought on paper must be validated in the machine on the platform before boarding; digital tickets carry a time and need no stamping.
  • Italy ↗Venice charges day-visitors an access fee on selected peak days; check the city's official site if you are not sleeping there.

Riva del Garda sits at the northern tip of Lake Garda, under Mt. Brione, in Trentino. The old centre is compact and mostly pedestrian, so you walk everywhere; buses and boats reach the rest of the lake. It is a lake-and-mountain base rather than a sightseeing city: two or three nights covers the town, the Ponale path and one mountain day. Summer is warm and busy; May–June and September are the best balance.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable and largely car-free. Trentino Trasporti buses link the town with Arco, Torbole and the lake villages; ferries run the length of Lake Garda from the harbour. A car helps for mountain days and is a liability in the centre in July–August.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 30 min

Trentino Trasporti bus from Riva, about 15 min

Climbing, a castle and a walkable old town; easy half-day.

Rovereto

go

Door to door: About 1.25 h

Bus to Rovereto, about 1 h

Mart modern art museum and the nearest railway station.

Trento

go

Door to door: About 1.25 h

Bus or car, about 1 h

Regional capital with a castle and a good old centre.

Malcesine and Mt. Baldo

go

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Ferry or bus down the east shore, then the cable car

Cable car to the ridge; check operating dates outside summer.

Madonna di Campiglio

overnight

Door to door: About 1.75 h

Car or bus via the Brenta road, about 1.5 h

Dolomites walking and skiing; too far for a relaxed return day.

Canazei

overnight

Door to door: 2–2.5 h

Car or bus via Trento, 2 h+

Dolomites base; sleep there rather than day-trip.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Historic centre (Piazza III Novembre, Piazza Cavour)

Pedestrian, walk to the lakefront and the tower; no car needed, book early in summer.

Viale Rovereto / San Nicolò marina

Hotels, campsites and the beach strip, 10–20 min walk south of the centre.

Via Longa / Viale Trento

Quieter residential edge, 10–15 min walk to the old town; good for parking.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for tourists; the real risks are summer heat, strong afternoon wind on the lake, and mountain trails where weather turns fast — tell someone your route.
  • Parking in the centre is restricted; use the signed car parks at the edge and walk in.
  • Afternoon wind on the lake is strong — windsurfers and swimmers should know their limits.
  • Many lake ferries and mountain lifts run only from spring to early autumn; check dates.
  • Summer weekends and Italian public holidays fill hotels and campsites: book ahead.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contracts for VRN, VBS and BGY with last-bus cutoffs and taxi fallbacks.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Piazza III Novembre, the Rocca and harbour, San Nicolò marina, the Ponale trailhead.
  3. Place pages with verified hours (Torre Apponale, Rocca Scaligera/MAG, Inviolata church) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Ferry and bus timetable fixtures so the lake and Arco legs can go green.
