Riva del Garda
Base here 2–3 nights if you want lake swimming, windsurfing and the Ponale trail on foot; skip it as a day-trip from Verona — 2 h each way.
Riva del Garda sits at the northern tip of Lake Garda, under Mt. Brione, in Trentino. The old centre is compact and mostly pedestrian, so you walk everywhere; buses and boats reach the rest of the lake. It is a lake-and-mountain base rather than a sightseeing city: two or three nights covers the town, the Ponale path and one mountain day. Summer is warm and busy; May–June and September are the best balance.

Get around
The centre is walkable and largely car-free. Trentino Trasporti buses link the town with Arco, Torbole and the lake villages; ferries run the length of Lake Garda from the harbour. A car helps for mountain days and is a liability in the centre in July–August.
