Coonoor sits at 1,839 m in the Nilgiri hills, 17 km from Ooty, and is the second hill station of the range. It is smaller and calmer than Ooty, built around tea gardens, a botanical park and a handful of viewpoints reached by road. The toy train from Mettupalayam stops here, which makes it a practical overnight on the way up or down. Two nights covers the town and the ridge; three lets you add a tea factory and a longer walk.

Getting around

Autos and shared buses cover the town; a short hop is a few rupees and a cross-town auto is roughly ₹100–200. Upper Coonoor is walkable, Lower Coonoor is crowded and steep. Viewpoints (Dolphin's Nose, Lamb's Rock, Laws Falls) are 7–10 km out with no useful bus, so hire an auto or car by the half-day.

Watch out

Safety

Coonoor is a small hill town; the practical risks are steep, unlit roads after dark, wildlife near Tiger Hill at dusk, and mountain-road nausea. Keep to lit streets at night and do not walk isolated trails alone.
  • Mountain roads have 14 hairpin bends; if you get car-sick, take the toy train or sit in front.
  • Do not stay at Tiger Hill after sunset: the walk back to a paved road takes about 30 min and bison and leopards are in the area.
  • Tea sold at tourist viewpoints is often not what it claims; buy from a shop in town instead.
  • Monsoon (Jun–Sep) brings leeches and slick trails; carry a rain shell year-round.
  • Hill hotels can be cold and damp at night: ask for heating or extra blankets.
