Hogeland is the open clay country north of Groningen city: low ridges, dike villages, two 18th-century manor houses and the Wadden Sea edge. Trains run twice an hour to Winsum, Warffum and Uithuizen, so you can see the main sights without a car. Two nights is enough; three if you add mudflat walking or a ferry to Schiermonnikoog.

Getting around

Two Arriva train lines run north from Groningen twice an hour: Groningen–Roodeschool (Sauwerd, Winsum, Baflo, Warffum, Usquert, Uithuizen, Uithuizermeeden) and Groningen–Delfzijl (Sauwerd, Bedum, Stedum, Loppersum, Appingedam). Change at Sauwerd between them. Buses 61 and 65 fill the gaps; a bike is best inside villages and along the dike.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe; the real risks are wind and rain, unlit dike paths after dark, and mudflat walking without a guide. Emergency 112; non-urgent police 0900-8844.
  • Villages are small and spread out: check the last train or bus back before an evening out.
  • Mudflat walking is only with a licensed guide and at low tide; never set out alone.
  • Some borgs and museums close in winter or open only Tue–Sun: check before travelling.
  • Wind and rain come in fast off the Wadden Sea; carry a waterproof layer even in summer.
