Kasauli is a small colonial hill station on a ridge at 1,927 m in Southern Himachal Pradesh, 77 km from Shimla and 70 km from Chandigarh. There is little to do beyond walking, two viewpoints and a church, which is exactly the point: one night covers it, two if you want to slow down. Come in the off-season (November to February) and you may walk for an hour without meeting anyone.

Getting around

The town is a walk: Mall Road to Christ Church is minutes, Sunset Point about 1 km from the bus stand. Monkey Point is roughly 4 km on foot. Shared taxis and local buses to Gharkhal, Dharampur and the outlying hotels exist but are not guaranteed — check locally and agree the fare first.

Watch out

Safety

Kasauli is a small, low-crime hill town and safe for tourists, including solo walkers in daylight. The real risks are the narrow hill roads after dark, army-land boundaries at Monkey Point and Gilbert Hill, monkeys, and monsoon slips on the trails.
  • Monkey Point sits inside an Air Force base: register at the guard station at the end of Lower Mall. Bags and cameras are not allowed inside the temple premises; entry closes at 17:00.
  • Gilbert Hill is army land and the trail there must be left by 18:30 — a trail access restriction, not a general town rule.
  • Hill roads from Dharampur and Parwanoo are narrow and single-lane; avoid arriving after dark.
  • Monkeys on the trails and around viewpoints will take food from your hand or bag.
  • Off-season (Nov–Feb) many cafés and shops shut and the ridge is cold and often fogged in.
