Bergen is a small town of about 12,700 people on the Lüneburg Heath in Lower Saxony, 25 km north of Celle. It is not a sightseeing town: the reason most travellers come is the Bergen-Belsen memorial, 10 minutes south, where Anne Frank died. The town has a 350-year-old farmhouse museum, a Lutheran church from 1826 and a historic trail of 11 stops. One night is enough; two if you want to walk the heath and see the megalithic graves.

Getting around

Bergen is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes; there is no town bus service, so on foot or by taxi covers the centre. Regional buses do exist: CeBus line 100 links Bergen with Celle (hourly on weekdays, a few weekend departures), and in summer the Entdecker Bus runs through the villages as far as Celle station. The nearest passenger rail station is Celle, 25 km south. Bicycles can be rented by the day or week from the shop on Am Falksmoor.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are unlit country roads at night, deer on the B3, and the military training area west of town where you must not walk off marked paths.
  • Bergen's own railway stations are freight-only: do not plan to arrive by train.
  • The Sieben Steinhäuser megalithic tombs sit inside the Bergen-Hohne training area and are normally open only at weekends.
  • The Africa Museum in Sülze opens by appointment only: call ahead.
  • Many restaurants close one day a week (the pizzeria on Am Friedensplatz closes Tuesdays): check before you walk over.
