Bergen
Go for one night, or as a half-day stop from Celle: the Bergen-Belsen memorial is the reason to come, the town itself needs two hours.
Bergen is a small town of about 12,700 people on the Lüneburg Heath in Lower Saxony, 25 km north of Celle. It is not a sightseeing town: the reason most travellers come is the Bergen-Belsen memorial, 10 minutes south, where Anne Frank died. The town has a 350-year-old farmhouse museum, a Lutheran church from 1826 and a historic trail of 11 stops. One night is enough; two if you want to walk the heath and see the megalithic graves.

Regional buses do exist: CeBus line 100 links Bergen with Celle (hourly on weekdays, a few weekend departures), and in summer the Entdecker Bus runs through the villages as far as Celle station. The nearest passenger rail station is Celle, 25 km south. A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are unlit country roads at night, deer on the B3, and the military training area west of town where you must not walk off marked paths.
