Kodaikanal is a hill station at about 2,200 m in the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu, in Dindigul district. The town centre around the star-shaped lake is compact and walkable; the viewpoints sit 5–8 km out and need a taxi. Two nights covers it. Come in Apr–Jun for clear views, or Sep–Feb for cold, misty mornings.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: lake to Bryant Park is about 10 min on foot. Auto-rickshaws are not available in the central area, so sightseeing runs on fixed-rate taxis — minimum fare ₹300 with 3 km included, and a ₹500 drop charge for Vattakanal (Feb 2026). Regional buses to Vilpatti, Poombarai and Perumalmalai cost about ₹7–10. Cycles can be hired near the lake; check brakes before setting out.

Watch out

Safety

Kodaikanal is safe for tourists, including solo women, in the town and on the main viewpoints. Real risks are cliff edges with no barriers, fog, monkeys, and unlit lake paths after dark. Keep a layer on: nights drop to single digits in winter.
  • Guna Caves are fenced off and entry is not allowed; the surrounding ravines are unmarked and people have fallen.
  • Bear Shola Falls was closed to the public as of Jan 2025 — check before walking there.
  • Berijam Lake needs a forest-office permit, usually arranged by your taxi driver on the morning of the visit; vehicle numbers are capped in peak season.
  • Monkeys at Green Valley View and Pillar Rocks grab food and bags — keep nothing loose.
  • The lake path is dark and has stray dogs in places; walk between 18:00 and 19:00 and head back.
  • Hill roads fog over after about 16:00 in the monsoon; do not drive the ghat at night.
