Niğde is a small Central Anatolian city at 1,229 m with a compact Seljuk core: a castle hill, carved tomb towers and mosques from the 13th and 14th centuries. The standout sight, Gümüşler Monastery, is 10 km out of town. Most travellers see it in half a day between Kayseri and Adana, or as a base for the Aladağlar mountains.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: castle, mosques, tombs and museums sit within about 1 km. Dolmuş to Bor runs hourly or better and takes about 20 min. The Erciyes Ekspresi train calls at Bor, Kemerhisar and Ulukışla. For Gümüşler and Kemerhisar you need a dolmuş, taxi or car.

Watch out

Safety

Niğde is a quiet provincial city and feels safe by day and evening; the real issues are winter ice, long empty roads out to the villages and summer heat. Carry small lira notes and use 112 for anything urgent.
  • Ak Medrese has been closed for years; the exterior is what you see.
  • Alâeddin Bey Mosque in Bor was damaged by floods in 2016 and remains closed.
  • Few cafés serve beer; do not count on a bar scene.
  • Winter brings snow and ice at 1,229 (≈ US$30) m; summer afternoons are hot and dry.
