- Türkiye (Turkey) ↗Check whether your passport is visa-exempt; if it is not, apply only at evisa.gov.tr — lookalike sites charge extra and some sell nothing.
- Türkiye (Turkey) ↗At mosques cover shoulders and knees, take shoes off at the door, and women carry a headscarf; stay out during prayer times.
- Türkiye (Turkey) ↗Taxis must run the taximeter; refuse flat quotes, or book through BiTaksi or Uber so the ride is logged.
- Türkiye (Turkey) ↗Carry lira in small notes for tea, markets, tips and toilets; prices move with inflation, so treat every printed price as dated.
- Türkiye (Turkey) ↗Do not take stones, coins or tiles from ancient sites, and export no antiques without a museum certificate; travellers have been detained at airport customs.
Kayseri is a working Anatolian industrial city of about 1.4 million, 350 km southeast of Ankara, and most travellers only see its airport on the way to Cappadocia. Stay one night and you get the best Seljuk mosque-medrese cluster in Turkey, a 13th-century citadel, a covered bazaar and pastırma, with hotel rooms far cheaper than Göreme. Two nights is the ceiling unless you ski Mount Erciyes.

Arrive & move

Getting around
Trams and buses are run by the municipality; buy tickets in advance from kiosks, or load the Kart38 smart card for a reduced fare. Tram T1 runs along Sivas Boulevard between İldem and the western industrial zone, T2 links Talas with Cumhuriyet Meydanı, and T3 reaches the bus terminal and the new YHT station. The old town sights are walkable from each other.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Door to door: 1.5–2 h
Bus or dolmuş east via Nevşehir and Avanos, or a pre-booked airport transfer
The reason most people land at ASR; buses run once or twice a day from the terminal.
Mount Erciyes
cautionDoor to door: About 1 h
Road south from the city, about 15 km to the mountain and further to the resort areaRoad south from the city, about 9.3 mi to the mountain and further to the resort area
Winter skiing with long lift lines; in summer the lifts reach trails, but the summit is for experienced mountaineers only.
Door to door: 5–7 h
Bus hourly round the clock, about 5 h; train three times a day, about 7 h
Too far for a day return; the bus is faster than the train until the high-speed line opens.
Eat & sleep
Which area to sleep in
Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Kocasinan Bulvarı (railway station strip)
Budget-to-mid hotels just outside the station, including Novotel and Ibis; best for one night with bags and early trains.
Castle and bazaar quarter
Converted Ottoman mansions and business hotels within walking distance of the citadel, Ulu Camii and the Kapalı Çarşı.
Bus terminal area (Osman Kavuncu Bulvarı)
Modern chain hotels opposite the terminal; only worth it if you leave on a night bus.

- Airport-to-bed contract for ASR: last bus times field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
- Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: castle and bazaar, Hunat and Sivas Boulevard, Kocasinan station strip, Talas.
- Place pages with verified hours for the castle, Archaeology Museum, Seljuk Civilisation Museum and Hunat complex.
- Erciyes ski-season fixture so winter arrivals get lift, road and rental status before they commit.
