Kayseri

Give Kayseri one night for the Seljuk citadel and bazaar, or use it as a cheaper airport and bus gateway to Cappadocia, 1 h 15 min east.

Kayseri is a working Anatolian industrial city of about 1.4 million, 350 km southeast of Ankara, and most travellers only see its airport on the way to Cappadocia. Stay one night and you get the best Seljuk mosque-medrese cluster in Turkey, a 13th-century citadel, a covered bazaar and pastırma, with hotel rooms far cheaper than Göreme. Two nights is the ceiling unless you ski Mount Erciyes.

5 km north of the centre; buses 101 and 271 run downtown about every 30 min, and a board outside Arrivals lists official transfer rates.

Get around

Trams and buses are run by the municipality; buy tickets in advance from kiosks, or load the Kart38 smart card for a reduced fare. Tram T1 runs along Sivas Boulevard between İldem and the western industrial zone, T2 links Talas with Cumhuriyet Meydanı, and T3 reaches the bus terminal and the new YHT station. The old town sights are walkable from each other.

Scams and watch-outs

  • The high-speed line from Ankara is under construction and its completion date keeps slipping: check before you plan a rail arrival.
  • Ankara trains take about 7 hours and have couchettes but no sleeping car; the buffet may not run.
  • The bus terminal is 6 km northwest of the centre and cold in winter; the tram stop is next door.
  • Gilaburu juice is a local sour drink and mildly toxic in quantity: keep it to a small glass.
  • Pastırma and other meat products usually cannot be brought home: eat them before you fly.

Kayseri is a conservative, low-crime city and the centre is fine on foot by day and evening. The real annoyances are winter ice, aggressive carpet sellers around the bazaar and long-distance buses that arrive after midnight.
