  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • New Zealand ↗Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA (with the tourism levy) before travel, including many transit passengers; others need a visa. Apply only through Immigration New Zealand or its official app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • New Zealand ↗Declare all food, plant and animal products, and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents, on the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; undeclared risk items bring instant fines.
  • New Zealand ↗Drive on the left; give way as signed at one-lane bridges; an English-language licence or one with an approved translation or International Driving Permit is required.
  • New Zealand ↗Freedom camping is restricted: sleep in a vehicle only where signed as allowed, and in many places only in certified self-contained vehicles.

Dunedin is the South Island's second city and its most Scottish one: a compact, walkable centre of Victorian and Edwardian buildings from the 1865–1900 gold-rush years, wrapped around a harbour and steep hills. The university keeps it young and cheap to eat in. Most visitors come for two things the centre cannot give them: the Otago Peninsula, where albatross and penguins nest within a 40-minute drive of the Octagon, and the drive south to the Catlins. Two nights is the working minimum; three lets you add the peninsula and a day trip without rushing.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable, but blocks are long and the suburbs climb steeply, so check the contours before walking. Orbus buses run from the Central City Bus Hub on Great King Street; route 8 (Normanby–City–St Clair) is every 15 min and passes the university, Botanic Garden and Baldwin Street. Route 18 reaches the peninsula but stops short of Larnach Castle and Taiaroa Head. A Bee card costs $5 to set up and cuts fares below the cash price. Taxis and Uber fill the gaps; there is no train or bus to the airport.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Otago Peninsula (Taiaroa Head and Larnach Castle)

go

Door to door: 40–60 min each way

Self-drive via Portobello Road, or Orbus route 18 from the museum (does not reach the castle or the head)

A full day with a car; book castle entry and any wildlife tour ahead.

Port Chalmers

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Orbus route 14 from the Bus Hub, or the harbour shared trail by bike

Half a day: harbour village, galleries and the cruise-ship wharf.

Oamaru

go

Door to door: About 2 h

Intercity bus, about 1 h 40 min; or drive SH1 north

Victorian precinct and blue penguins at dusk; feasible as a long day trip if you leave early.

Door to door: 2–3 h to the first sights

Drive SH1 south then the Southern Scenic Route

Too far for a return day; sleep one or two nights on the coast.

Alexandra and Central Otago

overnight

Door to door: 3–4 h

Drive via SH8 through the Maniototo, or bus connections via Cromwell

Fruit country and rail trail; not a day return.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

The Octagon and George Street

The walkable core: cafés, bars, i-SITE, buses. Best for a car-free stay.

Dunedin North / university

Cheaper beds and student-priced food; 15–20 min walk to the Octagon.

St Clair

Beach suburb with a saltwater pool and cafés; 15 min by bus or car from the centre.

Port Chalmers

Harbour village 14 km northeast; use it if you arrive by cruise ship or want a quiet base.

Watch out

Safety

Dunedin is a low-crime city and the centre is safe by day and night; the real risks are winter ice on the hills, narrow peninsula roads shared with cyclists, and cold, changeable weather on any coastal walk.
  • Winter streets ice over and the city gets snow every two or three years: drive and walk to the conditions.
  • No scheduled public transport serves Dunedin Airport; book a shuttle or taxi before you land.
  • The peninsula road is narrow and shared with cyclists; wildlife viewing is best at dawn and dusk, when driving is hardest.
  • Baldwin Street is a residential street: walk up, do not block driveways.
  • Accommodation tightens and prices rise during university orientation and graduation weeks.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for DUD: shuttle and taxi bands field-checked, no-bus warning, late-arrival rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Octagon and George Street, railway station and Toitū, university and Botanic Garden, St Clair.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Larnach Castle, Toitū, Olveston, Speight's) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Peninsula wildlife fixtures with season and time windows so gates A–D can go green.
