Dunedin
Ōtepoti
Give Dunedin 2 nights: one for the Octagon-to-railway-station walk, one for the Otago Peninsula wildlife drive. Skip it if you only have one South Island week.
Dunedin is the South Island's second city and its most Scottish one: a compact, walkable centre of Victorian and Edwardian buildings from the 1865–1900 gold-rush years, wrapped around a harbour and steep hills. The university keeps it young and cheap to eat in. Most visitors come for two things the centre cannot give them: the Otago Peninsula, where albatross and penguins nest within a 40-minute drive of the Octagon, and the drive south to the Catlins. Two nights is the working minimum; three lets you add the peninsula and a day trip without rushing.

Get around
The centre is flat and walkable, but blocks are long and the suburbs climb steeply, so check the contours before walking. Orbus buses run from the Central City Bus Hub on Great King Street; route 8 (Normanby–City–St Clair) is every 15 min and passes the university, Botanic Garden and Baldwin Street. Route 18 reaches the peninsula but stops short of Larnach Castle and Taiaroa Head. A Bee card costs $5 to set up and cuts fares below the cash price. Taxis and Uber fill the gaps; there is no train or bus to the airport.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Kia ora or a handshake; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; overlong small talk before business
- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter streets ice over and the city gets snow every two or three years: drive and walk to the conditions.
- No scheduled public transport serves Dunedin Airport; book a shuttle or taxi before you land.
- The peninsula road is narrow and shared with cyclists; wildlife viewing is best at dawn and dusk, when driving is hardest.
- Baldwin Street is a residential street: walk up, do not block driveways.
- Accommodation tightens and prices rise during university orientation and graduation weeks.
Dunedin is a low-crime city and the centre is safe by day and night; the real risks are winter ice on the hills, narrow peninsula roads shared with cyclists, and cold, changeable weather on any coastal walk.
