Tepatitlán is a working highland town of about 150,000 people in Jalisco's Los Altos, ringed by agave fields and small distilleries. The centre is compact and walkable: a Baroque parish church with 63 m towers, a French-made iron kiosk on the Plaza de Armas, a covered market and a handful of casual eating places. It is a stop on the Los Altos tequila route, not a destination in itself. One night covers the church, the market and a distillery tour; two nights only if you want the Cerro de la Campana trails or you are here for Feria Tepabril in late April.

Getting around
The centre is walkable: plaza, church, market and Palacio Municipal sit within about 10 minutes on foot. Taxis wait at sitios near the plaza and hotels; agree the fare first or ask for the meter. For the distillery at San Matías and the Cerro de la Campana trailhead you need a taxi, a tour or your own car. Long-distance buses arrive at the Central de Autobuses on Calle Matamoros 750, in the southern outskirts.

- Feria Tepabril (late April) fills hotels and the plaza: book weeks ahead or avoid those dates.
