Nimmitabel
Stop for 2–3 hours on the Monaro Highway, or sleep one night if you are breaking the Cooma–Bega or Cooma–Bombala drive; there is no reason to base a Snowy Mountains trip here.
Nimmitabel is a Monaro tableland village of about 320 people on the B23/B72 duplex, 36 km southeast of Cooma, 51 km north of Bombala and 72 km west of Bega. It is a road stop with a pub, a motel, a bakery, a cafe and a small pioneer museum — not a destination in itself. Its value is timing: a coffee and leg-stretch between Cooma and the coast, or a cheap bed when Cooma and Jindabyne are full in ski season.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around
You need a car. The town is one short main street plus a few side streets, all walkable in 5–10 minutes. NSW TrainLink coaches stop at the Nimmitabel Coach Stop, but there is no local transport and no taxi rank — check coach days before you rely on it.

Watch out
Safety
- Frost and black ice on the Monaro from May to October, and occasional snow: check the forecast and road status before a winter drive.
- The B72 from Bega is winding with big elevation changes; allow more time than the distance suggests.
- Fuel, food and phone signal thin out between Cooma and Bega: fill up in Cooma.
- Most kitchens close by mid-afternoon; do not arrive at 4 pm expecting lunch.
