Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Benelux ↗Dutch and Belgian police can ask anyone to show identification (in the Netherlands from age 14): carry the original passport or EU ID card — a photocopy is not accepted.
  • Benelux ↗Tap-in fares, Dutch and Belgian domestic tickets and Luxembourg's free transport all stop at the border: buy an international ticket for cross-border legs, or you will be fined on board.
  • Belgium ↗Belgium is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Belgian sources for your passport.
  • Belgium ↗Cities have different names in Dutch and French (Antwerpen/Anvers, Gent/Gand, Brugge/Bruges, Luik/Liège); check both on tickets and signs.
  • Belgium ↗Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent have low-emission zones; if you drive, check that the car is registered or allowed before entering.
  • Belgium ↗Belgian unions call national action days that stop trains, trams and flights; check SNCB and your airline two days before any travel day.

Antwerp is Belgium's second city and its biggest port, 40 minutes from Brussels by train. The historic core is compact and walkable, the cathedral and the Rubens houses sit within 15 minutes of each other, and the fashion and diamond trades give the city a working edge that Bruges and Ghent do not have. Most visitors see it as a day trip; one night is enough to see the centre without rushing, two if you add the museums or the Left Bank.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Grote Markt to the cathedral is 3 minutes, the station to the Grote Markt about 25 minutes on foot. De Lijn runs trams, buses and the pre-metro; a single fare is valid for one hour, and cards or day tickets are bought in the app or at fixed points, not with cash on board. De Waterbus links the quays and the Left Bank, about €4 one way.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Old centre (Grote Markt, Groenplaats, Meir)

Walk to the cathedral, museums and the Scheldt; noisier at night.

Antwerpen-Centraal and Diamond district

Best for a one-night rail stop; 10–15 min walk or a short tram to the old centre.

Het Zuid

Museum quarter (KMSKA, FotoMuseum) with bars and restaurants; 20–25 min walk from the station.

Left Bank (Linkeroever)

Cheaper rooms across the river; reach it by pre-metro tunnel or the Sint-Anna foot tunnel.

Watch out

Safety

Antwerp is a safe city by day and mostly by night; the real risks are pickpockets on the Meir and around the station, and the low-emission-zone fine if you drive in unregistered.
  • The whole centre is a low-emission zone: foreign cars must be registered before entering, and driving in unregistered risks a €150–350 (≈ US$180–450) fine.
  • Street parking in the centre is for residents and permit holders; visitors use underground car parks (about €2–4.80 (≈ US$3–6) per hour) or a park-and-ride at €1 (≈ US$2) with public transport into town.
  • Do not board a Eurostar with a regular intercity ticket, or the reverse: the fine is heavy and the platforms are shared.
  • Pickpockets work the Meir, the station and tram stops; keep bags zipped in crowds.

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Antwerp. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct · avoid Nov–Feb (grey and wet); check the Christmas-market weeks if you dislike crowds · month by month →
  2. 3 airports and 4 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 5 day-trips, door to door
  6. 4 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contracts for ANR, BRU and AMS: last-train cutoffs, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Centraal and the Diamond district, the old centre, Het Zuid, the Left Bank.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (cathedral, Rubens House, KMSKA, MAS, Plantin-Moretus) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. LEZ and parking fixtures so arrivals by car can go green.
