Muncho Lake Provincial Park
Stop here if you are driving the Alaska Highway: camp at MacDonald or Strawberry Flats for CAD 20 cash, walk the short lakeshore trails, and drive the Folded Mountain and lake pull-outs. Day visitors pay nothing; the park is a road stop, not a destination.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.
- Peace Country and Northern Rockies ↗Fill up whenever you can; between Fort Nelson and the Yukon border services are far apart.
- Peace Country and Northern Rockies ↗Winter driving needs chains and daylight planning; summer still means long hours at the wheel.

Muncho Lake Provincial Park is a corridor park along the Alaska Highway in northern British Columbia: a long glacier-fed lake in green-blue water, mountains on both sides, two small cash-only campgrounds, and a handful of roadside pull-outs. It was set aside in 1957, before the highway was fully pushed through, and the old road works — wooden culverts, corduroy road beds — are still in the bush. There is no long trail network and no entrance fee. You stop here because you are already driving Highway 97 between Fort Nelson and Watson Lake, and because Stone sheep, moose and bears are regularly seen from the road. Treat it as a night or a photo stop, not a destination in itself.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The viewpoints and campground beaches are reached by car with short, mostly flat walks.
- Pit toilets at both campgrounds; no paved paths or accessible facilities are confirmed (check).
Visiting lightly
- Pack out everything; there are no bins beyond the campgrounds.
- Keep the shoreline and boat ramp clean; the lake is the water source for the area.
- Do not feed or approach wildlife, and keep dogs leashed in the campgrounds.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Muncho Lake Provincial Park?
Nothing for day use. It is a British Columbia provincial park, so there is no entrance fee for the viewpoints, beaches or pull-outs. You pay only if you camp: about CAD 20 per night per site at MacDonald or Strawberry Flats, cash only (2026 estimate).
What are the best hikes in Muncho Lake Provincial Park?
There is no long trail network. The realistic walks are the flat lakeshore path from MacDonald campground, short wanders at Strawberry Flats, and the roadside stops at Folded Mountain and the Muncho Lake Viewpoint. Treat the park as a scenic driving stop with short walks rather than a hiking destination.
When is the best time to visit Muncho Lake Provincial Park?
June to August. The campgrounds open in May and close in mid-September, daylight is longest in June and July, and wildlife is most visible in summer. Winter visits are possible on the highway but almost everything is closed.
Do I need a park pass?
No. Muncho Lake is a provincial park, not a national park, so the Canada Discovery Pass and US America the Beautiful pass do not apply. See the park passes page for what those passes do cover.
Can I book a campsite in advance?
The two campgrounds are small, 15 sites each, and are generally first-come, first-served with cash payment at the site. Do not count on a reservation; arrive by mid-afternoon in July and August (check).
Is there fuel or food in the park?
There is gas and a cafe at Double G Service and a restaurant and gas station at Northern Rockies Lodge, both on the highway by the lake. Beyond that, fill up and stock up in Fort Nelson or Watson Lake.
