Pedernales

Go for 2 nights if you want Bahia de las Aguilas and Jaragua National Park; skip if you only have time for one beach base.

Pedernales is a small, sleepy town on the southwestern tip of the Dominican Republic, near the Haitian border. It is the base for visiting Bahia de las Aguilas, an 8 km white-sand beach, and Jaragua National Park. The town itself is walkable and has a local beach, but there is little else to do. Most travellers stay 2 nights: one full day for the beach and park, plus travel time.

  • Caribbean ↗Several islands (Turks and Caicos above all, also the Bahamas and Jamaica) jail visitors for a single stray bullet or cartridge in their luggage; empty every bag and pocket before you pack.
  • Caribbean ↗From August to October keep a free last day before your flight home and check the national hurricane centre daily; airports close when a named storm approaches.
  • Caribbean ↗Wearing camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians in several islands, including Barbados, Antigua, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Grenada, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica; leave it at home, children's clothes included.
  • Dominican Republic ↗Fill in the free e-Ticket form on the official migration site (eticket.migracion.gob.do) for arrival and departure; ignore sites that charge for it.
  • Dominican Republic ↗The land border with Haiti is not a tourist route: do not plan overland travel into Haiti.
  • Dominican Republic ↗Avoid driving at night outside cities: unlit roads, motorbikes without lights and animals make it the main risk.

Watch out

Safety

Pedernales is generally safe, but remote. The main risks are rough roads, limited medical facilities, and the border area: avoid crossing into Haiti without proper documentation.
  • Buses from Barahona can be hard to catch late in the day; plan to arrive early.
  • The Haitian border is nearby; carry your passport and visa if crossing.
  • No ATM in town? Check before you go; bring enough cash.
