- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Boise is Idaho's capital and largest city, sitting where the high desert meets the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, on the Boise River. Downtown is compact and walkable, with the Greenbelt path, a Basque Block and a cluster of museums around Julia Davis Park. Most visitors use it as a 2-night base for the foothills and the Snake River Plain, or as a stop between Salt Lake City and the Pacific Northwest. Locals say "Boy-see", not "Boy-zee".

Getting around
Downtown is walkable and the Greenbelt is a paved 40 km path along the river for bikes and on foot. Valley Regional Transit buses are thin: most routes stop around 18:45 and many do not run on Sundays. Outside the centre you need a car — rent at the airport. I-184, Capitol Blvd, State Street and Meridian Road clog at rush hour; I-84 eastbound is heavy in the morning, westbound in the afternoon.

Grid of older houses and dense trees, walkable to downtown in 15–25 min; quiet, residential, few hotels.
Boise Bench / Vista Ave
Cheaper chain hotels and the straight run to the airport; a car or bus needed for downtown.
Meridian / Nampa (west suburbs)
Suburban hotels near I-84; only worth it if you are driving on to Oregon or the Snake River Plain.
