Geraldton is a small gold-and-forestry town of about 1,800 people in the Municipality of Greenstone, on the Trans-Canada Highway 280 km northeast of Thunder Bay. There is no scheduled air or rail service: you arrive by car or on the Kasper Bus. It works as a one-night break on the long Highway 11 drive, a fishing and camping base at MacLeod Provincial Park, or a golf stop, not as a destination in itself.

Safety

A quiet small town; the real risks are winter cold, wildlife on Highway 11 at dusk and long fuel gaps between towns. Ask about posted prices before you sit down in a bar.
  • No scheduled flights or passenger trains: the nearest VIA Rail stop is Longlac, about 40 km east.
  • Winter driving: Highway 11 can close in snowstorms; check Ontario 511 before setting out.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on Highway 11 between towns.
  • Highway 11 was rerouted for the Greenstone Gold Mine: follow signs, not old maps.
  • Services thin out between towns on Highway 11 — fuel up in Geraldton before the Longlac–Nipigon stretch.
