Brampton, CumbriaBrampton

Base here one night only if you have a car and want Hadrian's Wall or Lanercost Priory; otherwise day-trip from Carlisle, 25 min by bus.

Brampton is a small market town of about 4,200 people, 16 km east of Carlisle, on the edge of Hadrian's Wall country. The old centre is compact and preserved, with an 1817 octagonal Moot Hall, a Philip Webb church and a ruined priory three miles out. It is not a Lake District base: the lakes are 40-60 km southwest and the town has no bus station, no 5G and a station a mile from the middle. Come for one night with a car, or as a half-day from Carlisle.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 10 minutes end to end. Everything else — the station, Lanercost Priory, Talkin Tarn, the wall — needs a car, a bike or a taxi. Stagecoach bus 685 runs hourly from Carlisle (25 min) and continues every hour or two to Haltwhistle, Hexham and Newcastle. Trains from Carlisle take about 20 min but the halt is a mile southeast of town with no waiting room and no lift to the Carlisle-bound platform.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 45 min by bus, about 40 min by train including the walk to the station

Stagecoach bus 685 from Front St, or train from Brampton station

Castle, cathedral and the museum; the obvious wet-day fallback.

Lanercost Priory

go

Door to door: About 15 min by car

Car or taxi 5 km (3.1 mi) northwest; no useful bus

English Heritage ruin 3 miles northwest of town; adult ticket £8.50, child £4.40, concession £7.50, daily 10:00–17:00 (2026 estimate).

Hadrian's Wall at Birdoswald and Gilsland

go

Door to door: About 30 min by car

Car via the B6318, or bus 685 towards Haltwhistle then a taxi

The nearest stretch of wall that still looks like a wall; the best sections are further east between Hexham and Greenhead.

Talkin Tarn Country Park

go

Door to door: About 10 min by car

Car or taxi 3 km (1.9 mi) south off the B6413

Flat perimeter path of about 1⅓ miles (2.1 km (1.3 mi)), wheelchair-friendly; sailing and kayaking on the water.

Brampton Old Church

caution

Door to door: About 20 min on foot

Car, bike or a 1-mile walk west of town

Redundant 12th-century sandstone church on the site of a Hadrian's Wall fort; often locked, key sometimes from the farm next door (check).

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min by car

Car via the A69 and A595, or train to Carlisle then bus

Doable as a day out but not a base swap: too far for a casual evening return by bus.

Brampton town centre (Front St and Market Place)

Walk to pubs, the Co-op and the Moot Hall; the Howard Arms is the classic in-town option.

2–3 km (1.2–1.9 mi) northwest; The Sally and The Fleece at Ruleholme, both with parking.

Talkin and Castle Carrock

3–5 km (1.9–3.1 mi) south; village inns and quiet lanes, best with a car.

Hallbankgate and Farlam

3–5 km (1.9–3.1 mi) southeast; Farlam Hall for a splurge, Belted Will Inn for a mid-range room.

Watch out

Safety

A small market town with no reported tourist-crime pattern in the sources; treat specific risk claims as check and take the usual care on unlit lanes after dark and on fast A-road verges between villages.
  • Brampton station is a mile from the centre and step-free only to the Newcastle-bound platform; the Carlisle side needs a three-mile detour or the footbridge.
  • St Martin's Church is often locked outside services; do not plan the day around getting inside.
  • Naworth Castle is a private residence and only opens for booked private events.
  • Irthing Vale Caravan Park has been closed in recent seasons; check before towing anything here.
  • 5G has not reached the area; 4G works on all UK carriers in town and on approach roads.
  • If you are here for the 2027 Tour de France stage, expect the A7 and A689 to close for hours; check local media.
